The first white-tailed deer one buck and four does - arrived in Finland on 8 September 1934 as a donation of the Finns living in American. This modest beginning was the start to the fascinating history of the species in its new homeland.

The introduction of the white-tailed deer from the United States to Finland is a unique story of success because almost without exception, such inter-continental transfers have failed or caused massive damage. But the introduction of these deer went well and the new population causes no notable problems.

Every nature lover gets great pleasure in seeing a white-tailed deer out in the wild. Second only to moose, this deer is economically the most important game species in Finland. Little is know about many aspects of its fascinating life.

This book was written by Juha K. Kairikko. He has served as the Executive Director of the Finnish Hunters Association and the Editor in Chief of the Jahti-Jakt magazine.

The photographs in this book were taken by Jaakko Ruola. After a long career in business, he became increasingly interested in photography. He has always enjoyed being outdoors and around the change of the millennium, he really started to concentrate on nature photography.
